Thank you, Julian Barnes. Succinct account of what it’s like. In order to keep my children fed and clothed I was lucky enough to make a lot of cash from genre fiction. My heart is in theatre however and I know I can’t survive on that. Thank heavens my daughters have flown the nest and I can say, ‘yes, please,’ to £7,000 a year should I be so lucky. Even after our most destitute when my ex-husband left us with only the clothes we stood up in, I never thought of money. I’d say then that ‘blind faith’ is what every writer needs.
